You’re Never Too Old
You’re Never Too Old….To Be an Online ESL Teacher
I am in my 60’s, on the short end of a century. Is my life over? Shouldn’t I just “retire” and be done with “it?” Am I too old to do……(fill in the blank)? To each of these questions, my answer is a definite "NO!"
Online teaching is relatively new in the overall scheme of education. It is a steep learning curve for many of us who were or even still are brick-and-mortar teachers (B&M to those of you cool with ESL lingo). Computer/IT issues? What to do? ….. Make a selfie-video? You’ve GOT to be kidding?! ….. TPR? What in the world is that? … So very, very, very much to learn.
Can YOU do it? YES!!!!! I am here as living proof that it can be done!
I began my online ESL journey in 2019, at age 60, and have since been contracted with 3 different companies, my latest being ZebraEnglish. I was a B&M teacher years ago, homeschooled both my 2 special-needs kids, daughter with type-1-diabetes, ADHD, and gifted (tested top .01% IQ) and son with Down Syndrome, asthma, and ADHD, so both ends of the educational IQ "bell curve." I have also coached cheerleading, led in Boy Scouts, taught religious education, etc. and have a plethora, over 25 years in fact, of teaching *in person* experience.
Online teaching is DIFFERENT but the SAME. You can do it! Because in the end, it is all about the students’ learning and not you (or your age!), anyway. This teaching is perfect for not only those of us nearing or in retirement age, but also those with physical disabilities that preclude working outside the home. Furthermore, in the Chinese culture, old(er) people are given a bit more respect than in western countries, so embrace your age! It’s a GOOD THING! 😊
Where do you begin this new learning adventure? You educate yourself. How? YouTube videos. Platform resources. Facebook Chat group. Workshops. The possibilities for learning to better yourself to be the best online ESL teacher you can be, are endless! Use them! You are NEVER TOO OLD to learn! If I can do it, you can, too!
Remember Grandma Moses was in her 80’s before she picked up a paint brush. Here is a link to others who started their famous careers after age 50….
I hope it motivates you to give online ESL teaching a try. Those precious students are waiting for you! And for you, personally, just keep on learning…it will keep you young! Warm wishes, Valerie
