Coached Applicant = Success
As mentor teachers, we see the challenges potential teachers face trying to get hired by ZebraEnglish. Many great teachers do not make it through the hiring process due to something they missed during the interview process. ZebraEnglish only wants to hire a limited number of teachers, therefore their rubric is very specific. Knowing the rubric and what they want from you is important, but even more important is having someone evaluate your skills and help you clean up things that you may or may not see. Many excellent teachers go through the application process, evaluate the feedback that ZebraEnglish gives them based on their interviews, make appropriate changes and apply again with more success the second time.
This process costs the applicant time and ZebraEnglish money because they pay the mentor teachers to interview the applicant each time they go through the process. This is the main reason ZebraEnglish has an incentive program for referring applicants. The referring teacher gets paid when their applicant succeeds. If ZebraEnglish had a goal of hiring 100,000 teachers then the incentive would be to make a name for yourself so you could get all the links you can, hoping that the applicants pass. As mentioned before, this is not the case. ZebraEnglish has a goal of hiring a limited number of excellent teachers who are ready to supplement their student's current curricula.
We say all this to say, we want your coaching to be a success for you and for the applicants.
A good coach should help in the following ways:
- Offer or recommend a support group that personally answers questions as they are asked.
- Review your applicants' intro videos.
- Go to bat for your applicant.
- Connect your applicants to other excellent teachers.
- Know and understand the goals of ZebraEnglish and communicate those to your applicants.
- Connect with other teachers so that you can share their resources that you know will help your applicant.
- Offer online teacher talks with teachers you are connecting with or have already helped through the process (ZOOM Meetings).
- Schedule one-on-one sessions with your applicants to go over their skills and help them polish the skills needed for success.
- Be a friend who really connects them to the ZebraEnglish family.
As an interviewer, I can tell within 60 seconds whether a candidate received coaching or not. There is nothing more frustrating than denying a candidate who COULD have been great...if they had only reached out and asked for help. A single coaching session could mean the difference between teaching at ZE or waiting 3 months to reapply. A single session. Is it worth it? Absolutely. Are YOU worth it? I have been teaching online for some years now. I have worked for 3 different companies teaching English and am in good standing with all of them still today. I have no complaints, as the industry with its ups and downs has been good to me overall. One thing that I immediately noticed differently about Zebra was the mentoring. Yes, I used a code but I never really expected to talk to the mentor. After all, I have used referral codes before and have actually never talked to a mentor! So much to my surprise, my mentor began texting me. Hey, how is it going...Can I help in any way...do you have any questions. She did not bother me or harass me. She just let me know she was available if I needed anything. After I told her things were hectic and I did not have much time, she tailored her information to me. She left me helpful voice messages with my permission. She shared company and demo specific information that helped me. I say this to say that if you are applying with Zebra it is so much easier with the help of a mentor. Don't make the mistake and think this company is the same as all the rest. The mentors at ZE are really there to help. My advice is to use them. Oh, I passed my demo AND am booked. Who would have thunk it?
I’m beyond excited to announce that I passed my demo today and went straight to teacher briefing!!! I want to thank God for this opportunity and for sending my coach to me. I am so glad I had a coach to help me navigate the ZebraEnglish hiring process! Although I am an experienced classroom teacher and also have experience teaching English online, I feel that I would not have passed my ZE demo and been hired without coaching. At first, I was not going to use a coach because it felt awkward asking someone I did not know for help and I felt like I didn't need it anyway! However, I soon changed my mind. My coach made me feel like she really wanted to help me and that I was not a bother. She was available to answer my questions, give me pointers and even had me demo teach a few slides to her so she could give me tips. When I did my Demo 1, I felt prepared and confident.
